چکیده

A general theory is presented to describe the effects of dispersion fluctuations on optical pulses propagating inside single-mode fibers modeled as a linear dispersive medium. It is shown that the pulse broadening induced by dispersion fluctuations can be quite large in dispersion-managed lightwave systems, especially at high bit rates, and can exceed that induced by third-order dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Correlation theory of polarization mode dispersion in optical fibers

A general theory is used to describe the correlation properties of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a birefringent, linear, dispersive medium such as optical fibers. The theory includes the effects of frequency dependence of birefringence on all orders, and it is capable of providing statistical information about secondand higher-order correlations among the polarization and PMD vectors. W...

EFFECT OF LOSS AND PULSE WIDTH VARIATION ON SOLITON PROPAGATION Part I. Fundamentals of soliton propagation

In this work, the propagation of solitons in single-mode optical fibers has been investigated theoretically by using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This equation combines the effects of group velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation present in optical fibers and also takes into account the loss of optical fiber. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been solved numerically by using t...

Numerical study of all-optical slow-light delays via stimulated Brillouin scattering in an optical fiber

We study numerically all-optical slow-light delays in room-temperature single-mode optical fibers induced by stimulated Brillouin scattering. We consider the propagation of a pulse through a cw-pumped Brillouin fiber amplifier, where the carrier frequency of the pulse is tuned near the Stokes resonance. Pulse delay and broadening of the Stokes pulse are studied in the small-signal and gain-satu...

Gain dispersion induced subpicosecond pulse breakup in a fiber and semiconductor laser amplifier combined system

We observe pulse breakup for 650-fs pulses propagating through 9 m of optical fiber followed by an InGaAsP amplifier. The pulses are broadened by a factor of two, and a second peak appears at about 2 ps after the main peak. To identify the responsible mechanisms, we solve numerically the propagation equations including nonlinear carrier dynamics and gain dispersion. We attribute the broadening ...

Optimization of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers for pulse compression.

A theoretical study of super generation in photonic crystal fiber and its application to pulse compression is presented. The evolution of the spectrum can be divided into three stages: initial broadening below a certain threshold propagation distance, dramatic broadening to a supercontinuum at a threshold distance, and, finally, saturation of the spectral width on propagation. It is found that ...
